1st Timothy 2:4 … God Desires All People to be Saved

Standard

1st Timothy 2:4

God desires all people to be saved

and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

***

Discussion: A simple verse, kind of like John 3:16 “For God so loved the world”. God’s heart is for the people of this world – all the people.

My hope is that my own heart & the hearts of my children yearn for the truth to be spread to all people of this world.

1st Corinthians 13 … Love

Standard

1st Corinthians 13

Love is patient and kind. Love does not envy or boast.

It is not arrogant or rude.

Love does not insist on its own way. It is not irritable or resentful.

Love does not rejoice in wrong-doing, but rejoices in the truth.

Love bears all things, believes all things, endures all things, hopes all things.

Love never ends.

So now, faith, hope, and love abide these three,

but the greatest of these is love.

***
Discussion: We are commanded to love. We hear that God loves us. 1st John even states that “God is love“.

1st Corinthians is amazing … it defines love.

Somehow the part that states “It is not irritable” stings me particularly – time to go confess to my kids & wife!

2 Timothy 3:16-17 … All Scripture is Breathed out of God

Standard

2 Timothy.rev2

2 Timothy 3:16-17

All scripture is breathed out of God

and profitable for teaching, for reproof

for correction, for training in righteousness

that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

***

Application: I believe this to be true – that the Bible is inspired by the very breath of God.

Although our ultimate right-ness before God is through the good work of Jesus … the Scripture/Bible continues this process by training us toward righteousness and gearing us up for further good works.

How do we know if our ideas about God are good and true? The Bible is able to provide us with teaching/reproof/correction from the very breath of God.

John 1:1-3 and 14 – The Word Became Flesh

Standard

John 1.rev2

Johns 1:1-3 and 14

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God

He was in the beginning with God

Through him all things were made, and without him nothing was made that has been made.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us

We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only son who came from the father

full of grace and truth

***

Application: Who is Jesus? Was he just a man … a great teacher … or something more? I love this summary of who Jesus claimed to be – and it goes nicely side-by-side with Colossians 1:15-17. Jesus was God … through Jesus everything was made … Jesus was before everything. And Jesus came in human flesh to show grace and truth. Profound stuff!

Encouragement: I taught this song to my 4-year-old about 7 months ago … and he is still able to tell it back to me! I hope you and your family can hold on just as tightly to verses like these.
